Definition

Politely decline or postpone an invitation or offer, indicating you can’t do it now but would like to later.

Examples

"I’d love to join you for drinks, but I have an early meeting tomorrow—can I take a rain check?"

"Thanks for the invite to the game; I have family in town, so I’ll take a rain check and catch you next time."

"This week’s crazy for me, so I’ll have to take a rain check on the hike—how about next weekend?"
